Music in Memory Care
Because of the music, lives are changed.
Music provides powerful emotional, cognitive, and physical benefits for residents in memory care communities. Here are real examples people have shared:
- “My mom’s smile is never brighter than when she’s listening to music.”
- “The best kind of joy is the joy that music brings!”
- “Music reached her when nothing else could.”
- “During the last years of my mother’s life, when she listened to the music of her generation, she came alive with smiles and more awareness.”
- “This matters. Hopefully, someday, someone will make a playlist for me.”
- “When words failed, music still found a way in. I’ll always support that.”
- “I know first hand the difference music can make. My mother found real joy in listening to her playlist, and we sang along with her.”
- “Music has the power to bring so much love and joy to everyone”
- “This music brings real comfort and real joy in very hard moments. I’m grateful it exists.”
These moments are what music in memory care is all about!
A letter worth sharing
One more example, written to Jerry after he had shared music in a memory care community:
“Dear Jerry,
We are reminded every time you visit with your ukulele of how much your support makes possible.
Because of you, lives are changed. Your lifelong love of music shines through the songs you share helping others to rediscover joy, connection, and emotional well-being.
Like the usually quiet and ‘stay in his room’ Mr Murphy at Clatsop County Memory Care in Warrenton, Oregon, the day he heard you sing the song “Happy Together” suddenly come dancing out of his room with a big smile on his face, people are moved by music, and engage more fully with the world around them because of the support you help provide.”
